Two years ago a group of Elk Rapids area people found themselves wondering why such an art-minded community didn’t have a juried fine-art show, as many other Northwest Michigan towns do. This shared interest led to Art Rapids!, one of Michigan’s finest art shows. The first Art Rapids! in 2006 was successful beyond all expectations, and last June’s second Art Rapids! was an even greater success. Now, as we begin work on the 2008 show, we have wonderful news to share and a vision to offer. The News The success of Art Rapids! allowed us to award scholarships of $500 to two graduating Elk Rapids High School seniors in the past two years, and now puts us in a position to increase that gift to the community. In 2008 we will not only double the graduating-senior scholarship to $1,000, we will offer a new $500 scholarship to an undergraduate Elk Rapids student to attend fine-arts related classes or an art camp to supplement their high school courses. Another exciting first for 2008 is our grant program. We will make an additional $2,000 in grants available to the Elk Rapids schools for arts-education projects. The Vision The Art Rapids! Board believes we can best accomplish our goals by establishing an Art Rapids! Foundation that will benefit Elk Rapids schools, offer scholarships, and provide the community at large with interesting art and arts events. We are very gratified by the community’s response so far and are ready to meet the new challenge of forming the Art Rapids! Foundation. We invite you, as a friend of the arts in Elk Rapids, to become a Charter Member of the Art Rapids! Foundation. Your membership subscription of only $20.00 a year is tax deductible, and will enable us to strengthen our scholarship program, continue the Elk Rapids Schools Art Assistance Program, and enhance all community arts programs in Elk Rapids. Your benefits as a Charter Member include: A subscription to the online Art Rapids! Newsletter. Advance notice and registration for Art Rapids! sponsored events. An invitation to the Artist’s Reception the night before the June fair. Recognition in the Art Rapids! website. Your support as a member of the Art Rapids!
