You’re invited to EXPERIENCE ART RAPIDS 2019: FILMS! in partnership with the Elk Rapids Cinema in downtown Elk Rapids. A variety of classic musicals, opera, and documentaries highlighting our local performers in the film industry will kick off on Friday, June 7 ending on Thursday , June 20 with films shown daily at 3:30 in the afternoon and 7:00 in the evening.

TUE JUNE 11 “COACH CARTER” 2005 (PG-13)

In 1999, Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) returns to his old high school in Richmond, California, to get the basketball team into shape. With tough rules and academic discipline, he succeeds in setting the players on a winning streak. But when their grades start to suffer, Carter locks them out of the gym and shuts down their championship season. When he is criticized by the players and their parents, he sticks to his guns, determined that they excel in class as well as on the court.

WED & THU JUNE 12 & 13 “THE WIZARD OF OZ” 1939 (PG)

When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz. They follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and en route they meet a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) that needs a brain, a Tin Man (Jack Haley) missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) who wants courage. The wizard asks the group to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) to earn his help.

SUN & MON JUNE 16 & 17 "CROSSING SUPERIOR" (by Stand Up for Great Lakes) 2018

It all started as a dream to cross Lake Michigan. Once that mission was completed, we soon realized the impact we could make on not only the Great Lakes but all rivers, lakes and streams. Our goal is to cross each Great Lake by stand up paddle board while raising funds/ awareness for this amazing natural resource.  We also hope to educate, protect and advocate. We are a non profit charity that would love your support.

TUE JUNE 18 “SINGIN IN THE RAIN” 1952 (G)

When the transition is being made from silent films to `talkies', everyone has trouble adapting. Don and Lina have been cast repeatedly as a romantic couple, but when their latest film is remade into a musical, only Don has the voice for the new singing part. After a lot of practice with a diction coach, Lina still sounds terrible, and Kathy, a bright young aspiring actress, is hired to record over her voice.

In observance of WORLD REFUGEE DAY on June 20th, we present this inspiring documentary of women who unite to develop a sustainable income from cooking. Filmed in a Palestinian refugee camp south of Beirut, where Mariam has lived her whole life, the film follows her struggle in uniting the female community with a business venture.
